In 2005, Congress passed the Paul Simon Water for the World Act, helping increase U.S. funding for water, sanitation and hygiene programs by 45%. Yet, close to one billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water, and the combination of inadequate sanitation and the lack of clean water are responsible for over two million deaths annually. An amended version of this bill is before the Senate, with provisions that would enable 100 million additional people to have access to clean water by 2015.
