The Antiquities Act is one of our nation's most valuable conservation tools that allows any president to designate federal lands and waters as national monuments for their historic, scientific or scenic significance. This law has been critical to the creation of our National Park System. Muir Woods National Monument, Grand Canyon National Park, and Statue of Liberty National Monument were all designated and protected under the Antiquities Act. Since its passage in 1906, this bipartisan law has been used by sixteen U.S. Presidents, eight Republicans and eight Democrats, to declare 149 national monuments.
