We were tilling up a flower garden 14 years ago when this scruffy kitten laid down in our dirt.
"Mommy, can we keep him?"

He was bright orange, so we named him Muppet. He was almost dead from malnutrition, and the damage caused significant cognitive impairment and destroyed his ocular nerve. But he survived and became the love of our lives.

All of his fur fell out and grew back in, revealing a beautiful, but blind, tiger cat. He wore dresses and sun hats and took rides in the umbrella stroller, much to my daughter's delight.

One day, I put Drano in the tub and put up the baby gate to keep my toddlers out, never thinking that Muppet might jump in there to enjoy the cold tub. Later that night, we found him under the bed with his feet literally disintegrating. A midnight trip to the emergency vet, and we learned that if he survived, he may never walk again.
Muppet spent three weeks at that hospital, receiving skin grafts on two feet, leaving him with webbed toes, but still all four feet. He came home on my daughter's fifth birthday. He enjoyed many years of snuggles, salmon for breakfast every day, and playing "BOOOOING" on our door stoppers. He loved milk rings, gift bows, and chirping at the birds outside our windows. He's afraid of the dishwasher and poops in the plants when nobody is looking.

He's in kidney failure and his time with us is dwindling. Muppet is old, frail, balding, and still the love of our lives. He gets lost in the house now, but he's ecstatic when we rescue him. Everyone says we gave him a good life - a life he wasn't likely meant to have. He gave us everything... his unconditional love, countless headbutts, his undivided attention, and a good life we likely weren't meant to have.
