Coughing, Sneezing Kitten with Bubbles Coming Out of Her Nose Wins Over Potential Adopters
After moving in together, my boyfriend and I immediately started thinking about adopting a cat. I looked online at many shelters in the Boston area. One day, I finished work early and I just had this feeling: I needed to go look for a cat right meow! I went to the only shelter that was nearby, downtown.
When I walked in, I was overwhelmed by the energy of care and love. As I was walking among the cages, I noticed this tiny quiet cat. She looked very sad and hopeless. I asked a volunteer about her. Turned out, this baby had been in this shelter for 1.5 months, and she became chronically ill with an upper respiratory infection.
There were bubbles coming out of her nose. She was sneezing and coughing. And my goodness - she was sad and shy. The doctor in the shelter told me that the only cure for her at this point would be a loving home. When I came back later that week with my boyfriend, we looked at many cats; most of them were active, joyful. I said, "Honey, if we don't adopt this sad kitten, no one will. She is very shy and she needs love to bring hope back to her heart."
We adopted her and renamed her Bast - the Ancient Egyptian goddess of cats. No pressure.
After we brought her home, her cold was gone in one week. It took us several months of patience and love to make her trust us enough and to not be afraid of hanging out with people. She is still not a lap cat, but she sits near us and even sometimes sleeps on our bed.
We built many different cat shelves around the house for her to own and to explore. The house is full of cat toys, cat tunnels and unconditional love that we provide to our little goddess. We are doctoral students and we have a lot of books and articles - Bast loves sleeping on them. We believe that's how she absorbs the knowledge of the world.
