Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that has served the local community for 50 years as a leader in building lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach and providing care for animals in need. APS has been helping animals in our community since 1970 and has managed the Durham County Animal Shelter since 1990. We are an open admission shelter, with our largest programs being the management of the Durham County Animal Shelter and our adoptions program. We have a fully staffed Veterinary Medical Department to provide onsite medical care and spay/neuter surgeries for animals that enter our shelter. We also offer a variety of safety net programs to help keep pets in their current homes when possible and help return stray pets to their homes when lost. We rely on contributions and support from caring individuals, foundations and corporations in addition to the county contract to feed, shelter and provide medical attention for nearly 4,300 stray, surrendered, abandoned, abused and neglected animals in our care annually.

Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site are joining NBC and Telemundo stations’ Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign to support shelters and rescues across the country by encouraging individuals to donate funds to help animal welfare groups with the most critical needs.

Each summer, shelters and rescues face an added stress on their resources from increases in puppy and kitten intakes due to spring litters. In 2021 shelters are reporting higher than normal intake rates, with unprecedented overpopulation in some areas. They need you now.
