Over 5 million Americans suffer with Alzheimer's disease. It is estimated that there are more than 15 million caregivers providing care to those with Alzheimer's and related dementias. The emotional toll on both those with the disease and their caregivers is overwhelming. They need assistance. They need resources. They need care. They call the Alzheimer's Foundation of America's toll-free hotline.

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America's toll-free hotline delivers compassion, knowledge, and care through licensed social workers, and provides information, counseling, and referrals to community resources across the nation. Licensed social workers will respond to your questions and direct you to appropriate local resources to meet your needs. No question is too small; no concern too insignificant.

The hotline operates Monday through Friday, 9 am to 9 pm (EST) and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. During these hours, social workers are available by phone, as well as via Skype and live chat. Counseling is available in English and Spanish. Thousands of callers reach out and receive help each month. Help enhance the work of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America by donating to the cause. Update from the Field

January 2018

With the help of YOUR donations, the AFA has been able to extend the National Toll-Free Hotline's hours to help more caregivers. Previously, the hotline operated Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. The hotline now operates until 9 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. With continued funding, the AFA hopes to increase the hotline's operating hours to 24 hours a day, every day, so caregivers can call and receive help at any time.

We have received a number of stories from caregivers who have benefited from the hotline's expanded hours of operation.

One story comes to us from Leonard, whose mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She lives alone and would regularly wander off, and once accidentally set fire to her kitchen because she forgot to turn a burner off. Leonard, frustrated and worried, contacted the hotline several times in one night. After multiple calls and conversations, AFA's licensed dementia-certified social worker was able to guide Leonard to first obtaining an in home aide for his mother. Additionally, through referrals to AFA's member organizations, his mother is now in an adult day social program to keep her engaged and occupied during the day.
