Quality Education for Haitian Girls
Quality Education for Haitian Girls
SKU: SKU: SK-85884
Help a Haitian girl realize her full potential.
Despite Haiti being one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, 80% of the schools are private. While most private schools in the United States provide a high quality educational experience, this is not always the case in Haiti. Approximately 75% of all teachers lack adequate training, and nearly 25% of teachers have never attended secondary school. Equally alarming is how few Haitian children attend school, especially girls. The percentage of children who complete primary school is low (50%), and sadly, only 20% of Haitian girls receive a secondary education (grades 7-13).
GreaterGood's GROW (Girls' Right to Opportunity Worldwide) program is dedicated to making sure girls around the world have access to a quality education. Currently, we are building a high school on the campus of the country's only recognized model primary school, Lekol Kominote Matenwa (LKM) in Matenwa, Haiti. In addition, we are expanding LKM's popular teacher training program. The new LKM High School will be girl friendly, requiring gender sensitivity training for teachers, students, and administrators, resulting in an environment where women feel respected and safe. Your support of GROW Haiti will be used to improve the quality of education in Haiti. Each donation will go towards books, tuition, and a teacher's salary.
You can help. Just $18.50 sends a Haitian girl to school for one month.
GreaterGood.org is devoted to addressing the health and well-being of people (particularly women and children), animals, and the planet.
In pursuit of these goals, GGO is focusing effort on young girls around the world -- their health and well-being, their safety, and their education. The GROW program will directly fund innovative, effective programs that keep girls in school throughout their secondary education years, wherever they are most needed.
Report from the Field
October 2017
We'd like to introduce you to 1 of the 15 students we hope to graduate this coming May!
Valancia (13th grade), youngest of eight children says "To me, education is life. When you have an education, you are prepared to speak in an assembly, in front of any group. If I were not enrolled at MCLC I would be just sitting around, but this school develops students understanding of many areas of life that you would never find at other schools. Also I admire Christaino Ronaldo, who is a Portuguese professional soccer player. I admire him a lot and I would like to work harder at soccer so I can be like him."
Since 2014 GGO has:
- Educated 151 girls: 69 primary & 82 secondary - secondary girls would have otherwise had to travel very long distances to get educated.
- Added 3 grades levels (grades 10-12) to the only Secondary School on the island. We will complete the buildout, with grade 13, of the first ever secondary school on the island this year!
- Provided an opportunity for their secondary school girls to be a part of our Girlsâ Voices Project, which encourages girls to use their voice to communicate their resilience and strength through media creation.
- Improved protein intake at 2.5 eggs for 339 students per week .
GROW (Girls' Right to Opportunity Worldwide) in partnership with GreaterGood.org, Dream Weaver Foundation and The Literacy Site™ is dedicated to improving girls' wellbeing by supporting and monitoring innovative projects that identify and remove barriers to girls' education across the globe.
