The United States spends more on healthcare than any other nation in the world -- over 15% of GDP and rising -- but is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not have a universal healthcare system covering all citizens. According to 2006 estimates, 47 million Americans do not have the most basic of health insurance. For these millions of uninsured Americans struggling to get by without ever going to the doctor, dental and eye examinations are unaffordable and too often neglected, sometimes leading to serious complications that early intervention could have prevented.
As Hubert Humphrey said, "The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor." That fine old community-minded spirit inspires Remote Area Medical® Volunteer Corps to provide free healthcare to people in remote areas of the United States and the world. Since 1985, RAM has conducted over 400 expeditions to deliver no-cost healthcare to communities that need it the most, including free dental and eye exams and services to towns that have asked for help. Recently, RAM has expanded its work into large U.S. cities as well.
You can help. This Gift That Gives More™ funds dental and eye exams for four needy Americans, including the costs of tooth extractions, anesthesia, and eyeglasses as needed. The professional expertise is donated; only the cost of the supplies is needed in order to accomplish this vital task.
The Remote Area Medical® (RAM) Volunteer Corps provides free healthcare, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States and the world. Founded in 1985, RAM coordinates volunteer doctors, nurses, pilots, veterinarians and support workers to provide no-cost healthcare to those with limited access to care. Medical supplies, medicines, facilities and vehicles are donated. RAM expeditions have served people in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Guyana, East Africa, India, Nepal, and more.
