Help Fund a Natural Birth Center in Tibet
Help Fund a Natural Birth Center in Tibet
SKU: SKU: SK-45593
Help promote safe, natural childbirth in remote regions of Tibet!
Tibet has one of the world's highest maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates. Most women deliver at home with the assistance of a female relative or friend. There are many reasons women do not deliver in a health facility, including lack of money, lack of transportation, lack of knowledge and lack of language skills.
The Tibetan Natural Birth and Health center in Rebkong County (Malho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province) is the first free-standing birth center in Tibet. A project of Tibetan Healing Fund, the Tibetan Natural Birth and Health Center provides high quality, safe, affordable, linguistically and culturally appropriate health services and health education. Services are provided on a sliding scale, and no woman or child will be turned away due to lack of money.
Up to April 2018, at the Tibetan Natural Birth and Health Center, delivered 4,923 babies safely, all are natural births!
The center will also serve as a training facility for community midwives who will work in the rural communities providing much needed pre- and post-natal care and newborn support. The center is managed by local Tibetans, and it will be integrated into the Rebkong County Health System in order to sustain its long-term service for the region.

Tibetan Healing Fund (THF) is a nonprofit organization working to improve healthcare and education for Tibetans. Originally an informal effort of Tibetan Buddhist monk and medical doctor Dr. Kunchok Gyaltsen, the fund was formalized as a nonprofit in 2001. THF's current programs include midwife training, health education and outreach, and Tibetan-language educational materials. The majority of Tibetan Healing Fund's programs are designed, implemented and managed by Tibetans themselves, using transparent and participatory methods while incorporating local and traditional knowledge.
